Is neutrality paying off?

Switzerland and China have maintained diplomatic relations since 1950.

It is essential to highlight that Switzerland was among the first Western countries to recognize the People’s Republic of China. Their relationship spans various economic, political, and cultural exchanges.

There are some critical aspects of this relationship:

  1. Economic Ties:

    • Trade: China has been Switzerland’s most important trading partner in Asia since 2010 and is its third-largest global trading partner after the EU and the US.

    • Investment: Both countries have invested in each other’s markets, with Swiss companies operating in China and Chinese firms investing in Switzerland.

  2. Political Conversations:

    • Switzerland and China regularly discuss various issues, including human rights, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

    • Switzerland’s China Strategy 2021–24 is an essential strategy that outlines its policy objectives, focusing on peace, human rights, prosperity, sustainability, and digitalization.

  3. Cultural and Educational Exchanges:

    • Numerous exchanges exist between experts, academics, and artists from both countries.

    • Cooperation in education, research, and innovation is also a significant aspect of their relationship.

Switzerland aims to maintain a balanced approach, fostering strong economic ties while addressing geopolitical and human rights concerns.

For this new episode in The Geopolitical Puzzle, my guest is Dr. Simona Grano, Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. She also co-authored the book China-US Competition: Impact on the Strategic Choices of Small and Medium Powers.

We discussed the relationship between Switzerland and China, how Bern handles relations between the United States and China, and Switzerland’s position regarding the recent elections in Taiwan.
